• Purpurite comes primarily from Sweden, but can also be found in Germany, France, Nambia, Brazil & the US
• While it is not a common find whatsoever, small deposits have been found in the state of Colorado in the US
• The best specimens are produced in Nambia
• It is found in phosphatic iron ores, pegmatites and hydrothermal veins
• It is classified as a phosphate mineral and receives it’s purple hues due to the presence of manganese
• It has a chalky texture and can easily transfer color onto your fingers when handling due to oxidation
• In some higher quality specimens it displays a natural chatoyancy
• It has a monoclinic crystalline system
• It was discovered in 1905 by a Swedish mineralogist
• The name purpurite comes from the Latin word “purpura” which simply means purple
• Mohs hardness of 4-5
• It is not water safe and should be completely steered clear of any water exposure
• Minimal sunlight is generally okay, but excessive exposure can lead to color fading
